Sense of place. Sense of home.

The countdown has begun…to the best party ever!

Hosting a New Year’s Eve themed party can generate a lot more stress than putting on most other kinds of events – you only have one night to get it right, and all your guests have chosen to spend their New Year’s Eve with you, rather than be anywhere else. That’s why selecting the right theme for your shindig – and doing it well – will make or break the magic moment when midnight hits, and set the stage for the next 365 days. No pressure!

Luckily, help is at hand. We’ve written a list of our top 10 fantastic New Year’s party themes to help bring you some fun and creative ways to celebrate the start of 2024, and see out the end of this year in style.

1. Masquerade Ball

For a New Year’s Eve themed party that’s bound to be unforgettable, why not amp up the drama and host a masquerade ball? There are many ways to do this, depending on how (let’s be honest) over the top you want to go with it. For those who aren’t all that into fancy dress, but love the idea of a themed affair, it’s possible to pop on a mask with a hint of sparkle, or dazzle in a classic suit for men, and you’ll still add an element of striking mystery to your do. Or, if you want to go full Bridgerton, you could transform your party venue into a period-themed baroque palace, bust out the Georgian wigs and the huge corset dresses, and for the men – it’s time to pull up your knee socks!

For even more magical escapism, you could hire a dance instructor to teach you some traditional partnered dancing steps on the night, and turn your space into an entire ballroom. Thankfully, our Gallery event space is decked out with a great open floor plan, making it the perfect dance floor for all kinds of parties, including weddings, easter parties or winter party theme ideas!

2. New Year’s Resolutions

Resolutions might sound like the boring bit of New Year’s, mainly because it’s the part where you have to sit down and think about yourself and all that self-bettering yadda-yadda. Wouldn’t it be fun to turn that thing you’re always putting off into an outfit and a conversation starter, and – who knows – that way you might actually stick at it? If you’re the sort of person who loves having goals, then a New Year’s party theme that centres around just that is perfect for you.

You can have this theme as serious or as silly as you’d like: either decorate the place with motivational banners and have a wall of post-it notes for your guests to write down what they hope to achieve in 2024, or dress as a fitness instructor from the 80s, head-to-toe in neon lycra if your goal is to ‘keep fit’, or a hotshot banker if you’re planning to save money. You can come up with resolution-pun cocktails, make inspirational speeches, or just dance the night away and do what you were always going to do!

3. Glitz & Glam

There’s nothing wrong with sticking to a classic New Year’s party theme, so if you’ve been waiting all year to head to a cocktail party, or just want a reason to do a new, cool eyeshadow look you saw on TikTok, or try that fun cocktail tutorial you watched ages ago on YouTube – then let’s make New Year’s the perfect excuse to do so.

You can incorporate a decades theme in here if you want to by adding a splash of 1920s decadence, or borrowing from the aesthetics of Babylon which was a box-office hit earlier this year…if you can cast your mind all the way back to January. Who needs a flashy firework display when you can hand out sparklers to all your guests and watch everyone twinkle under their own little firelight when the clock strikes twelve?

And given that Canvas House is located just a stone’s throw from the CBD, you and your guests may still be able to experience all the glittering lights of Melbourne’s own New Year’s Day fireworks displays! And all without having to deal with the city crowds on New Year’s either.

4. Spotify Wrapped

If it’s not Christmas everyone’s banging on about once December rolls around – it’s Spotify Wrapped. So why not make the year’s second most highly anticipated release the theme for your 2024 New Year’s party? Give your guests an opportunity to share their favourite songs and bands we know they’re already desperate to talk about, by having them dress as one of their top 5 artists or tracks from 2023. This could be an iconic red-carpet look, a recreation of album artwork, or even a literal depiction of a song’s title. For example, you could cover yourself head to toe in a bouquet if Miley’s ‘Flowers’ took your top spot, or find a furry rabbit costume if Bad Bunny is more your vibe.

You could even break out some karaoke if you want your guests to truly channel their inner rockstar, and have a flashing neon dance floor so once midnight hits, you can play everyone’s favourite tunes and get them off to a good start in 2024.

5. Presenting: 2023

If big blowout bashes aren’t really for you, but you’d still love to get a close-knit group of friends together to see out the year, then this next one is sure to be a great intimate theme to both reflect on 2023 and see in the new year. This particular New Year’s party theme is perfect for smaller spaces like ‘The Nook’ at Canvas House, which comes with projector screens that are just fit for a PowerPoint party.

The idea behind this party theme is simple: create a 5-10 minute presentation with slides carrying your friends through the key events, characters and plot twists of your year, accompanied with pictures, Q&A’s, and the benefit of hindsight. Then get your friends to present their own ‘2023 In Retrospect’ slideshows. Your audience will love recounting forgotten memories and stories from the last 12 months, whether they were there to see them unfold, or are watching what feels like the synopsis of a play with their best friends as the cast.

Think of this New Year’s Eve party theme as a way of rounding up, bonding with your closest friends, and ultimately being able to commemorate the fact you’ve all made it through. When midnight strikes, celebrate with a glass of bubbly, and take that main character energy with you into 2024.

6. 1994

Think of a decades party, but New Year’s-ified. Whilst the 1990s trend resurgence is still hot on everyone’s lips, hop on it yourself by travelling back exactly 30 years (yes, the ‘90s really were that long ago) to celebrate the turn of the year that gave us Friends, The Lion King and ‘Cotton Eye Joe’. You can honour this momentous year by dressing as a character from key pop culture fixtures, or finding a celebrity’s shoes to step into who everyone was talking about in 1994. There were some pretty iconic haircuts bobbing around at the time, like ‘The Rachel’ and ‘The Leo’, that you could DIY or easily find a wig for.

You could even do a couple’s look and go as Johnny Depp and Kate Moss, or get 4 friends involved and go as the Spice Girls, who first stepped onto our TV screens in 1994. Alternatively, you could go as someone who was born in 1994 – meaning Harry Styles, Justin Beiber and Dakota Fanning are all up for fancy dress grabs (and who will all also be turning 30 in 2024!)

Or, you could do 1984, but that would be a very different kind of party theme…

7. Casino Night in Vegas

There’s something about New Year that has us feeling extra lucky, right? So put your money (or counters… we endorse responsible gambling over here), where your lucky charm is, and spin the wheel on a casino-themed party that transports you right out to the sky-high fountains of the Las Vegas strip, maybe even a tiny bit more classy. Install roulette tables, hire a croupier for the authentic experience, and have your guests wander around partaking in games as they wish. Surely a bottle or two of champagne is in order for those who hit the big jackpots – and if they choose to spray it at midnight like they do in the movies then, really, who can blame them?

Your space will be as maximalist as maximalist can be, with red, gold, white and black pouring out of everywhere, with all the sparkle and glitter to match. You could hire burlesque dancers to make an appearance just before midnight, and send your guests home feeling like they’ve walked out of a fever dream.

8. Midnight Feast

Who doesn’t love a stealthy midnight snack? And on the most important night of the year, why not turn that sneaky indulgence into a full-blown feast? And of course, if you’re looking to roll with this particular party theme, we have to recommend that you find a private dining venue like Canvas House that boasts a full commercial kitchen that can cater for a larger guest list, and make your midnight meal the star of the show.

Of course, you’ll still want to be providing snacks throughout the night so your guests aren’t struck with hunger at twelve, but tell them to keep their appetite intact for the new year. So when you’ve all finished clinking classes, you can start 2024 with a big sit-down feast that will satisfy your stomach in a way that bellinis simply never could be capable of.

9. Golden Hour

For a modern twist on the champagne New Year’s Eve themed party we’ve seen oh so many times before, upscale your event to be a celebration of all things golden. A colour themed party is so easy for your guests to get on board with, and who doesn’t love a reason to cover themselves in the most dazzling colour of them all, to end this year in style and start off the new one with a bang?

You’ll still have plenty of champagne flowing, but you’ll also treat your guests worthy of the royal treatment to gold confetti, balloons, champagne jelly, and any other touches that you think are adequately glittering.

10. Set Sail on 2024

If you’re looking for an idea that’s totally different, take a leaf from Phileas Fogg. He’s a well-loved literary character who sailed around the world in 80 days, and considering New Year’s is all about new adventures on the horizon, then it seems a pretty good time to take that metaphor and turn it into a nautical party theme. You can make the most of the gorgeous weather here in Melbourne in the summer season, by donning your finest sailor attire.

This casual dress code will steer clear from all the sparkles you might see at other New Year’s parties, but will still incorporate a fun theme into your event with a decidedly sea-faring twist. You can serve canapes from around the world, and as the clock strikes every hour you can raise a glass for the countries before and after you who have struck land in 2024.
