This month marks 10 years since I took possession of a tired warehouse on Buckhurst Street in South Melbourne and started swinging a sledgehammer.

I had a business plan. I had a business partner. I had spent two decades running events from the client side, and probably attended a few too many corporate offsites along the way. But I was walking into an entirely new industry. And drawing on my experience working at Maccas in Mornington when I was 15 was going to be a tall order.

My interior designers, the ones who had helped me plan the previous space, took one look at the warehouse and bowed out gracefully, wishing me luck.

But I had a vision, two decades of understanding what makes a great event from the other side of the table, and an unshakeable feeling that Melbourne deserved something better.

Ten years later, Canvas House has hosted hundreds of events. Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull over the years during the Melbourne Grand Prix. Asahi, KPMG, MECCA and Colgate strategy and training days. Range reviews with some of Australia’s biggest FMCG groups, Chanel activations, intimate weddings, christenings and celebrations of life. We have laughed, we have cried, we have celebrated. We have weathered a global pandemic, a business partner walking out, and a financial landscape that has tested every small venue operator in the country.

This is the story of how it all happened. And honestly, it almost didn’t.

The Space That Was Never Meant To Be

Here is something most people do not know. Canvas House was my Plan B.

For months, I had been working on a completely different site in South Melbourne. I had engaged interior designers, builders, the works. Mood boards were locked in. Artwork and furniture pieces were about to be ordered. We were literally one day away from signing the lease.

Then, at the last minute, a friend suggested I check in with a builder she was working with, just to get a second opinion on some advice I had been given about gaining dispensation under disability access requirements.

That phone call changed everything.

The builder told me the advice I had received was incorrect. The site I was about to commit to had problems that would have been incredibly difficult and expensive to resolve.

I went home that night feeling completely disheartened. Months of work. Mood boards. Relationships with designers and builders. All of it, gone.

But I am not someone who sits still for long. So that same night, I logged on and started searching. And there it was. A listing for a warehouse space in South Melbourne that I had missed, because it was somewhat of an ugly duckling, or maybe because I was so focused on the charming features that already existed in the other space that I had blinkers on.

The next day, I was doing my first walkthrough of 137 Buckhurst Street, South Melbourne.

Walking Into Thoroughbred

The space was called Thoroughbred back then. It had been an event space of sorts, but it looked nothing like what you see today. It was rough. It was dark. I mean, let us face it, it was downright ugly, and not a functional layout. The kitchen was on one side of the building, now our storeroom, while the dishwashing room was on the other side of the venue. Most people would have walked straight back out.

I brought my interior designers along for the walkthrough, the same ones who had helped me on the other space. They looked around, looked at each other, and politely wished me all the best. They were not coming on this journey.

But I knew. The moment I walked in, I knew this was my space.

Anyone who knows me knows two things. I love a challenge, and I love to prove people wrong.

A few weeks later, the lease was signed. The challenge was set.

Sledgehammer Days

What followed were some of the happiest days of my life. And I mean that.

I had a vision for the space, but I did not truly know what I was working with until I started the demolition. I picked up a sledgehammer and started smashing things up, and with every wall that came down, I discovered more of the beauty that lay beneath.

Dark green plasterboard came off to reveal the original brick walls that are now one of Canvas House’s signature features. Mirrors came down. False ceilings were ripped out. I jackhammered the screed off the concrete floors, smashed through walls, and slowly uncovered a warehouse with extraordinary bones. Six metre cathedral ceilings, exposed steel beams, and the kind of raw character that no amount of interior design could manufacture.

While I demolished, I thought. Every swing of the sledgehammer gave me time to think about how I could bring this space to life and maximise every square metre.

I knew one thing from the start. Every space had to be multifunctional.

When I thought about the bar, I thought, could it also be a kitchen? I had always noticed that at house parties, everyone ends up hanging around the kitchen bench. If I could bring that same ease and casualness to Canvas House, it would set us apart from anything else on the market. So that is exactly what I did. Our main bar converts into what feels very much like a home style kitchen. Warm, inviting, and designed to draw people in.

I knew the greenroom had to work as something more than just a waiting room. So, we installed one way glass, turning it into a space that could double as a research room for focus groups, something corporate clients could not find anywhere else in Melbourne.

And the main event space? I knew it needed to be flexible, easily made bigger or smaller depending on the event. But not with those horrible concertina walls you see in hotels. That was not going to work, especially with six metre ceilings.

I looked up at the truss lines and thought, what if I could pull curtain rigging across those trusses? What if I could move curtains from one truss line to another, making the space bigger or smaller depending on what we needed?

It worked. And it is still one of the smartest design decisions in the venue.

Building It With The People Who Would Use It

Coming from a marketing background, I knew something that most venue owners probably do not think about. I was not just building for the client. I was building for every supplier who would ever walk through that door.

So early on, while the space was still a construction site, I brought in caterers, stylists, and audio-visual teams. And I asked them one simple question. What do you want from a venue that you are not getting today?

Their answers shaped everything. The commercial kitchen layout. The bump in access from the rear laneway. The power points. The lighting rigs. The storage. Every practical detail that makes the difference between a supplier who loves working in your space and one who dreads it.

I was building Canvas House while simultaneously making sure it would tick the boxes for everyone. Not just the clients paying the hire fee, but the caterers, the florists, the photographers, the audio visual technicians. Because I knew that if the suppliers loved the space, they would become my best salespeople.

And that is exactly what happened.

The First Event, And The Toilet In The Middle Of The Warehouse

While I had corporates in mind when I designed the space, it became clear very quickly that weddings were going to be a huge part of our market too.

I reached out to all of Melbourne’s leading caterers at the time, brought them into what still looked like a building site, and me, who looked like a tradie in my steel capped boots, often with a Slurpee in hand, which was as close to lunch as I would get, walked them through my plans, mood boards, and worked every bit of charm I had in me. I knew that these caterers would essentially become my sales team. And after the first few meetings, I knew I was onto something. Within minutes they were talking about clients they could bring into the space.

From there, the bookings started coming. My very first event was a large bar mitzvah. The clients put an enormous amount of faith in me, as did the event manager Nat Roth from P2P and Lazer from Kosher Klassique, who my accountant at the time had introduced me to, and in a venue that, at the time, was still very much a work in progress.

Nat and I still laugh about this. When the clients came through for their final inspection a few days before their event, the toilet was still sitting in the middle of the warehouse. There is a great picture of me sitting in the middle of the venue on that toilet, because it was the only seat I could find, paint splatters all over me, looking exhausted. The venue was full of tradies, the space was full of dust. They went out that afternoon and quietly found a backup venue, just in case.

Fair enough.

But once again, I love a challenge, and I love to prove people wrong.

We worked through the night. I remember washing and polishing glasses until the early hours of the morning, and hearing a knock at the back window There was Lazer, peering through the back doors, rain pouring down on him, just making sure it was all finished.

And when the doors opened the next day, Canvas House was ready.

Come this November, that will have been 10 years ago.

The Name

People often assume Canvas House is a reference to the blank canvas nature of the space. It is a nice thought, but that is not the story.

When I was searching for a name, I knew I wanted it to reflect something deeply connected to South Melbourne. The area was first settled by Europeans in the 1840s and became known as Emerald Hill. Then, during the Victorian Gold Rush of 1851, a tent city called Canvas Town was established right here. Home to tens of thousands of migrants from around the world who came together in search of a new life.

When I learned that history, the name came immediately. Canvas House was a way to pay homage to the area, and to celebrate the purpose of the space, which is bringing people together. I knew House had to be part of it, because I wanted people to feel like they were coming into someone’s home.

That spirit has not changed in 10 years.

The Week Everything Nearly Fell Apart

I should be honest about something, because I think it matters.

A few weeks after we opened, my business partner at the time decided she did not want to be involved in the business anymore. Looking back, I think she realised that this hospitality world of long hours, working most weekends, was not for her, and that she was better suited for corporate life after all.

That was difficult enough on its own. But there was also a significant outstanding builders’ fee that was going to be covered by my partner. When she walked, the money walked with her.

I had to go to the builder, the same person I had worked side by side with for months, the person who had watched me swing a sledgehammer and bring this vision to life, and tell him I could not pay the bill.

He looked at me and said he had seen how hard I had worked. He had seen what I had turned this space into. And he offered to convert the debt into equity.

Then another friend stepped in to support the business, and for that I am eternally grateful.

Was it good luck? Good management? Hard work? Probably a bit of all three. But I think it was also something else. The relationships I had built by showing up, working hard, and being honest about what I was trying to create. People believed in Canvas House because they could see how much of myself I had put into it.

Then Came The Pandemic

I remember it clearly. It was Grand Prix weekend, and I was flying back from Sydney. My phone started beeping. Cancellation after cancellation was coming through.

It was the start of the coronavirus pandemic. None of us knew then what was ahead.

As an events business in Melbourne, we were among the hardest hit. Not just in Australia, but arguably anywhere in the world. Melbourne’s lockdowns were longer and stricter than almost any other city, and the events industry was one of the last to reopen, with what felt like a hundred stop starts in between.

That first night back in Melbourne, my landlord called. She said five words I will never forget.

Nash, I want to help you.

That phone call was probably one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. And I think it was also one of the greatest acknowledgements of the hard work I had put in over the years, because she had seen me on the tools from day one, jackhammer in hand, paintbrush in the other, turning this space into something special.

Without her support over the next two years, I honestly do not know if Canvas House would have survived. It was tough. With her help, it was manageable. Without it, I am not sure I would be writing this today.

I am so grateful to her and her family. To this day, we catch up regularly. After the pandemic, I pulled together a beautiful dinner at Canvas House for her and her family, prepared by Ian Curley, one of Melbourne’s finest chefs and a great friend, as a small gesture of thanks for what they did to keep us going.

What 10 Years Has Taught Me

The industry has changed enormously since I opened those doors. Many of the caterers who were in the market when I started have since left. The financial landscape has shifted. Client expectations have evolved. And of course, the pandemic rewrote every assumption about what an events business could survive.

We have changed too. We have moved from being purely a venue hire business to now providing in house support and catering options as well. We have adapted. We have evolved.

But one thing has remained absolutely true from day one. We are authentic to our brand.

When people walk into Canvas House, the first thing they say is that it has a great energy and a great feel. I think that comes partly from the space itself. The ceilings, the light, the brick, the warmth of it. But I think it comes equally from the team. A lot of love has gone into this place, and people can feel it.

We are a small, senior team. We do not have layers of management or inexperienced staff slowing things down. When you deal with Canvas House, you are dealing with people who can make decisions, who care deeply, and who treat every event as if it is happening in their own home.

That has always been the vision. That has always been the brand. And 10 years in, I am more committed to it than ever.

What I Have Gained That No Corporate Career Could Give Me

I will be honest. I would probably have earned more money if I had stayed in corporate. But I would not swap the last 10 years for anything.

Because of Canvas House, I have formed a tribe. My chosen family. Some of the people who are now my nearest and dearest came into my life because of this venue. People from different age groups, different backgrounds, different walks of life. I have been to their weddings. I have celebrated the births of their children. I have travelled overseas with them.

And I have been able to make decisions and choices because they were the right thing to do, not because they made the best financial sense or because management told me to. Donating my time, my money, and the venue to causes and people who needed it. Making a real difference in ways that a corporate career simply would not have allowed.

That, more than anything, is what Canvas House has given me.

Looking Back At That Other Venue

Sometimes I think about the space I almost signed. The one that fell through the night before I found Canvas House.

It would have been three times the rent I am paying now. It was smaller. It was across several levels, which would have made it impossible to bring cars into the venue for automotive launches, one of the most exciting parts of our business. Noise control would have been a constant issue. Suppliers bumping in furniture and equipment would have been a nightmare.

It would have reduced my client base substantially. And it probably would have ruined me.

I do not know whether you would call that good luck, or whether you would call it following your gut and trusting your intuition. Maybe both. But I believe these things happen for a reason.

The Next Chapter

When I reflect on the last decade, I think about the incredible people who have walked through these doors. T

Ferrari. McLaren. Channel Seven and Channel Nine. Chanel. KPMG. Disney. L’Oréal. MECCA. Penfolds. Famous faces I never expected to meet. And hundreds of couples who chose Canvas House for their weddings and milestone celebrations. Clients have put some of most important day of their lives in my hands and for that I am grateful and honoured.

And the stories. Too many to know where to start, and most of them nobody would believe. I have almost seen it all. It has been exhilarating, exhausting, and occasionally unrepeatable. People always tell me I should write a book about it one day, and one day I just might.

It has been pretty special. It has been tiring. There is no denying that.

But as I look ahead, I am excited about what the next chapter brings. Who knows what is ahead? The one thing I know is that Canvas House will always be authentic to the original vision. A place that feels like home. Where you are welcomed, comfortable, supported, and looked after in every way we can.

Through flexibility. Through laughs. Through ease. Through love.

That is what Canvas House was built on. And that is what it will always be.

Japanese: Bento Boxes & Elevated Sushi

Japanese corporate catering is often the gold standard for lunch ‘on the go’. Bento boxes are compartmentalised, single-serve lunch portions that contain a harmonious combination of ingredients or dishes for individuals. Hand out bento boxes containing miso-glazed eggplant, black rice and wagyu steak, for lunch that is visually appetising as it is delicious.

You can serve high-quality sushi and sashimi alongside your bento boxes for an elevated addition to the corporate lunch box. If you want to really impress your guests, have sushi prepared fresh, on-site. With Canvas House’ fully functional commercial display kitchen, the art of watching skilled sushi chefs prepare these intricate bites will be almost as satisfying as eating them.

Stick to the Japanese influence with matcha, sparkling sake and sencha (premium green tea) provided as beverage options.

Food Trucks: Global Tasting Stations

Bring a hint of flavour from around the world without a kitchen filled with ‘too many cooks’. Food trucks are a stylish and flexible catering solution as they offer all sorts of different cuisines at an arm’s reach and affordable prices, to suit everyone’s palettes and experimental preferences. One guest can taste food from a country they’ve never visited before, while a less adventurous guest can stick to Aussie home comforts.

Food trucks make a great pick for less formal corporate lunches, as they don’t dictate a defined meal or sit-down time. Guests can graze throughout the event as they please, and this can even minimise food waste, as not everybody has the appetite for a three-course meal.

Food trucks are a great way to honour the diversity of your clients, your staff, or your business’ global outreach by incorporating local cuisines from around the world. But even if you’re a tight-knit group running a family business, they still bring an exciting splash of colour and variety to your corporate lunch.

French: Luxurious Long Lunches

The French are famous for hosting long, luxurious lunches in the middle of the workday that last for a couple of hours. Whilst the aim is to step out of the office, enjoy some fresh air, and most importantly, eat delicious food, they do also serve a social purpose – allowing colleagues and clients to bond over a meal and hold informal conversations about work or their company. Foster this relaxed environment with a decadent French meal that forces your guests to sit down, slow down, and get to know each other.

The French are fine-dining experts, so you’ll have no shortage of specific dishes to choose from. Canvas House works with some of Melbourne’s top caterers and suppliers, so we’re happy to provide specific recommendations, or work with chefs to arrange tailored menus for your event.

Don’t forget the thoughtful details that will boost your catering for corporate events even further. From colourful macarons to delicious French wine to pair with the meal you’re serving, your event will centre around the food, rather than being an afterthought.

Clean Australian: Green & Health Conscious Choices

A simple, minimalist way to make an impact with your corporate catering is to keep it clean and green. Many Australians are passionate about their health and will appreciate a delicately balanced meal that is accessible to vegans or vegetarians, packed with flavour, and easy on the stomach – especially if your event is hosted earlier in the day.

The secret is to take simple dishes and upscale them. Think mushroom and truffle arancini, heirloom tomato and mozzarella salad, grilled asparagus with almond cream, and vegan coconut ice cream with olive oil and sea salt. These plates are great for hot days or busy events where food isn’t front and centre, but they can easily be adapted into a more formal sit-down set-up.

Set up juicing stations and buffet spreads so guests can help themselves, with a focus on light refreshments and meals that don’t put you into a slumber in the middle of the workday.

Branded & Signature Food Items

Whether or not you’re leaning towards a certain type of cuisine, it can be helpful to consider how your menu or the food you’ll be serving will contribute to your company branding. These can be subtle touches and influences – not huge statements. For example, you could serve drinks with ice cubes branded with your logo, or company colour-coded desserts. You could invent cocktails after prominent people or departments, or even curate your menu around the nature of the event you’re hosting.

Signature food items can be small tokens that function like edible ‘props’, keeping your branding consistent throughout the event, whether they’re a type of sweet, an artisan bread from a local bakery, or a brand new invention unique to your company.

Branded catering is just one creative idea for your corporate event that adds an extra sensory dimension to your function. Serve these signature items throughout your corporate events, and you’ll win over the hearts of your guests.

Catering Ideas For Corporate Lunches: In Summary

As we’ve shared, catering for corporate lunches doesn’t have to be boring, or bland, or predictable. With a whole world of cuisines to choose from, it comes down to selecting the dishes and flavours that will best suit your event and even your brand.

If you’re looking for practical catering advice or menu suggestions for your company’s corporate party or event, give the team at Canvas House a call.

It’s that special time of year again… July? Aussies love any excuse for a party, and a real winter(ish) occasion makes it easier to don the festive accessories and eat all the traditional food we’re normally too hot to have an appetite for during December.

But beyond the overdone ‘ugly Christmas sweater’ and ‘Secret Santa’ tropes, how else can you celebrate Christmas in July, whether you’re looking for a party theme to put on over the winter holidays, or you’re planning a corporate event?

Once again, you can seek help from the experts at Canvas House for some more event inspiration, as we delve into unique mid-winter Christmas party themes in Australia.

Here are our top 7 festive Christmas in July party ideas.

A Christmas Feast For The Senses

Christmas In A Shoebox

Traditional Christmas Roast Dinner

Winter Wonderland Transformation

Christmas Movie Night

Who Sleighed Santa? Murder Mystery

European Christmas Markets

1. A Christmas Feast For The Senses

Winter here rarely resembles the imagery we see in Christmas films and visuals. So while we might not be surrounded by snowflakes and coniferous Christmas trees, we can indulge our other senses to get into the Christmas spirit.

Fill your space with scented candles and wax melts with red berry, pine forest or cinnamon tones. Make mulled wine to warm your stomachs and scent the room with a delectable, rich aroma of clove and stewed fruit. Hang tinsel in your Christmas party venue for a tactile decoration, and serve Christmas themed cocktails, from eggnog to chocolate dusted espresso martinis. Soundtrack with a crackling fire or traditional Christmas folk songs in the background.

The sights, smells, sounds and flavours of the festive season will make you feel like it’s Christmas in no time.

2. Christmas In A Shoebox

A slightly different way to celebrate the colder weather in July is to host Christmas ‘in a shoebox.’ Since you’ll likely be saving most of your gift-giving for *actual* Christmas in December, why not donate a small amount to a local charity this time instead? The idea is simple: fill an empty shoebox with essentials and small items that a child or person in need could benefit from.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money, but your contribution can still be significant. Pack your shoebox with sanitary items, school essentials, a small tech gadget such as headphones or a mobile charger, and one or two ‘wow’ items that can act as a small gift. Ask each of your guests to come with their own shoebox, and you’ll have a Christmas party that gathers friends or colleagues while helping the community at the same time.

3. Traditional Christmas Roast Dinner

Christmas Day on the 25th of December in Australia is not the ideal time to be slaving over an oven when it’s normally as hot as one outside. Besides, we’d all much rather be having a barbecue and enjoying the late sunsets! If you’re planning to host a more intimate, cosy Christmas in July party as an excuse to gather close friends and family, now is a great time to test your cooking skills and attempt a traditional Christmas roast dinner with all the trimmings.

We’re talking Brussel sprouts, stuffing, bread pudding, and mince pies. Of course, you don’t have to get your own hands dirty. Reach out to a local Melbourne venue with a commercial-scale kitchen, and hire caterers to do the job for you (then take all the credit).

4. Winter Wonderland Transformation

Most mid-winter parties in Australia nod to Christmas, but how many go the full hog and truly commit to the idea? This year, why not transform your venue into the Arctic Tundra or the North Pole itself, and go all out in creating a winter wonderland that’s decorated carpet to ceiling, from hanging icicles to fake snow scattered over the floor.

Tell your guests to prepare for a night with Father Christmas and the elves busy preparing all the presents. If you love a traditional party game, incorporate this theme through ‘pass the parcel’ and similar ‘icebreakers’. Working with experienced event planners for your party like you’ll find here at Canvas House will widen your imagination even more, with extra ideas and inspiration from the team.

5. Christmas Movie Night

On those rainy winter days, what’s more perfect than curling up in front of the TV or in bed and switching off from the world for a night of feelgood films? Invite your nearest and dearest for a sleepover-style party with pizza and pyjamas, and catch up over the soundtrack to your favourite shows, films and Christmas musicals.

If you’re the type who can’t host a party sitting down, host guests for a Christmas movie-themed party, with the dress code inviting people to don their best ‘Elf’ costume, or channel their inner Kevin McCallister.

6. Who Sleighed Santa? Murder Mystery

Let off some steam at your EOFY party or gather your most theatrical friends and host a Christmas-themed murder mystery. When festive themes generally focus on wholesome fun and child-friendly decor, a Christmas in July gathering is the perfect occasion to flip another tradition on its head.

You can be as minimal or maximalist with this festive party idea as you want, from asking your guests to dress as their characters to practicing short sequences that develop the storyline of the game. The most creative may choose to curate their own company or household-specific murder mystery, however, you can find plenty of structured game packages online, complete with props and printable clues.

7. European Christmas Markets

Rekindle memories (or Pinterest boards) of European Christmas markets, and put a pretzel twist on your festive theme. You could work with local vendors to supply your event with homemade crafts and traditional gifts; an especially great idea if you’re a local business yourself. Alternatively, host a craft seminar or gingerbread-house-making workshop so your guests or colleagues can delve into their creative side and learn how to make something new.

Set up stalls for pretzels, bratwurst, spiced wine and cider, with roasting marshmallows and fairy lights strung up to add to the warm ambience. Put on your best indistinguishable ‘European’ accent, and you’ll feel as though you were strolling through a German or Swiss or Austrian or Polish Christmas Market in no time.

Dress codes are cause for conversation no matter the event, but weddings place an extra amount of pressure on getting it right. And how can you be the best-dressed guest if you haven’t ‘fit the brief’?

Of course, you don’t want to upstage the bride or groom, but you also definitely don’t want to be the only person not in a suit, or the only person in a short dress sticking out in photos for all the wrong reasons.

In this blog, we’re taking you through wedding dress codes, and how to ace them. We’ll share the popular choices for Australian weddings, and tips on how you can effortlessly crack them.

A Brief Summary Of Popular Wedding Dress Codes

Take another look at your wedding invitation. What dress code is indicated, and what on earth does it mean? Below, we’ll cover an introduction to each of the most popular wedding dress codes in Australia.

Cocktail Dress Code

Born from cocktail party celebrations, cocktail wedding dress codes are among the most popular and commonly chosen, because they strike a balance between formality and flair. Men can wear a matching suit, with a tie or pocket scarf in a complimentary colour. Women can choose a midi or ankle-length option, allowing for playful design or colour, or a jumpsuit or suit accessorised with appropriate jewellery. If there is no dress code specified on your invitation, err on the conservative side of these cocktail dress guidelines.

Formal (Black-Tie Optional) Dress Code

Formal or black-tie optional dress codes are a step-up and require a little more consideration. Tuxedos are optional, though most men will opt for a conservative suit in dark colours, with a matching tie and crisp white shirt. For women, strike a balance between the elegance of a cocktail dress, and the formality of a black-tie ballgown. A well-tailored jumpsuit, statement jewellery piece, or classy up-do is a great way to achieve this look without feeling creatively restricted.

Black Tie Dress Code

Black tie dress codes are another popular choice for weddings, though they indicate a marked step-up in formality, with less room for interpretation. Women will be expected to wear a floor length dress (not showing the ankle), likely in a relatively simple design and made from quality fabric. Men are required to wear tuxedos with black bow ties and patent leather shoes, as well as cufflinks. Matching suit pieces are a must. The focus here should be on minimal luxury, meaning – don’t look to the Met Gala for inspiration.

Dressy Casual (Beach Formal) Dress Code

We’re a casual nation at heart, and more couples are leaning towards relaxed approaches to their wedding. Dressy casual or beach formal dress codes indicate a modern take on formality. For example, a woman could wear a patterned dress just above or below the knee, with a greater focus on brighter colours and less structured fabrics. A man could wear a collared shirt paired with smart trousers (rather than suit pants), and a blazer. Don’t be mistaken though – bermuda shirts, shorts, or anything for a casual day at the beach is not appropriate, unless specifically mentioned on the invitation.

White Tie (Full Dress) Dress Code

The most formal of them all, a white dress code is quite rare to see on an Australian wedding invitation, but it’s an important (and difficult) one to get right. Often reserved for military, royal or similar high-status weddings and events, this traditionally aristocratic dress code requires utmost formality. Men must wear tuxedos with a formal white shirt and bow tie as well as a hat or gloves, and formal footwear. Women are expected to wear an elegant full-length evening gown, accessorised with jewellery, heels, and a small purse or clutch bag.

Do’s & Don’ts Of A Wedding Dress Code

So, we’ve explored the requirements for each specific dress code – but what about the general tips on preparing an outfit for a wedding? These do’s and don’ts apply for every wedding, no matter the style or genre.

Do: Err On The Side Of Caution

It’s better to be overdressed than underdressed. There – we said it. So if you have two dresses you can’t decide on in terms of how well they match the dress code, choose the longer option. If you have two suits in your wardrobe and you’re not sure which is most appropriate, wear the darker one. The couple who’ve invited you to their wedding will be much more grateful if you’ve put in a little more effort than was expected than a little less.

Don’t: Forget About The Shoes

Your shoes are still part of your outfit, and therefore must still meet dress code expectations. While the more formal end of the spectrum will require specific footwear, you shouldn’t neglect your footwear either way. Aside from making a quality suit look sloppy or an elegant dress look unpolished, you’ll be sending the signal that you haven’t fully committed to showing up for the couple on an important occasion. Unless explicitly stated – no flip-flops!

Do: Bring Appropriate Accessories

The specifics will depend on the location, season and time that the wedding takes place, but think about what else you might need apart from the main garments. Make sure these accessories are wedding–appropriate. For example, if you’re taking an umbrella, choose one in a simple, muted design. If you’re likely to need a warmer jacket or coat, don’t wear a casual puffer or hoodie. Whilst smart shoes are important, bring comfortable flats too if you need to get from A to B or walk over uneven terrain, such as if the wedding reception venue is hosted in a forest or vineyard setting.

Don’t: Upstage The Couple

As much as you want to be the best dressed guest – there are two people you shouldn’t be trying to outdo. If you’re wondering whether your planned outfit is at risk of overdoing it, just send a photo to a few friends before you end up creating an awkward situation. This follows the general rule of avoiding wearing white or cream to a traditional Australian wedding – typically a bride will wear a white dress. Generally, it’s best to avoid all-black looks as well.

Some dress codes may specify all-black, or black and white, but assume these colours are written off unless otherwise stated. If you’re attending a wedding in a foreign country or that’s following different traditions, check the customs and culture to make sure you don’t accidentally cause offence – as some colours are considered unsuitable or unlucky to wear at a wedding.

Cracked It: The Wedding Dress Code

We’ve told you how you can be the best dressed guest by following whichever wedding dress code you’re presented with to a ‘T’. With this manual, you’ll ace every wedding you attend, no matter if you’re in coattails or smart casual.

But what if you’re learning about wedding dress codes to choose one for your own Big Day, and you need somewhere to host it?
The All-Important Bridal Table – Is It Really That Important?

The concept of the bridal table in a traditional Western wedding seating layout is where the bridal party sit in a straight line with specific individual placements, all facing the guests. This provides a focal point and can make it easier to direct speeches. However, there’s an increasing shift towards a more relaxed approach to bridal table seating arrangements.

Instead, consider a circular table in the middle of your venue, where guests can easily approach and see you. Or, do away with a bridal table altogether. Place your bridal party as you would any other guest, and save a couple of seats at each table, so you and your partner can meander between them as you please.

You can also look at seating arrangements in other cultures for inspiration. For example, at traditional Chinese weddings, the bride sits with the groom’s family, while the bride’s family sits separately, incorporating principles of feng shui into the arrangement. In Japanese culture, the bride and groom’s family often sit furthest away from the centre of the room to demonstrate humility by offering the ‘best seats’ to other guests.

Consider Traffic Flow & Access Points

An often overlooked seating arrangement factor to consider is the flow of human traffic in your space. Your wedding reception should feel like a relaxed affair, not a squeezed-in bunch of people struggling to move between tables. Try to avoid having guests boxed in a corner or shoved against the wall, needing to say ‘excuse me’ to fifteen people before they can leave their seats and access other areas such as the toilet or bar.

Also consider how your wait staff will be able to serve your guests, especially if you’re planning a sit down meal. If you’re planning a buffet, make sure you leave enough floor space around the food so your guests can easily access all the tasty dishes prepared, whilst avoiding lengthy queues and congestion.

Ensure clear pathways for entrances and exits, the bar and toilets, and clearly signed (and easily accessible) emergency exits. Whilst it might be tempting to skip this detail as ‘it’s only for one day’, you’re better safe than sorry.

Make Space For Dancing!

Whatever seating arrangement you opt for, you’ll want to have enough room in your venue for entertainment! Whether you’ve got live music or a DJ, make space for a stage for music equipment, and a dancefloor for your guests to celebrate you tying the knot! If you’re not choosing to have a traditional bridal table layout, this dance area can double up as the centrepoint for your guests to gather for speeches.

Choose somewhere with ample space for speakers, lighting and other props you might want to bring onto your dancefloor. Equally, don’t make your dancing space too large and overbearing that your guests feel intimidated to fill it!

Wedding Seating Charts

If you’re wondering how to do a wedding seating chart for your ceremony, there’s no tried and true technique, but there are a couple of methods you can follow.

If you want to keep certain individuals apart, such as separated parents or very different friendship groups, start with them. Place them on different tables or sides of the room and arrange your seating plan from there. Alternatively, assign people to tables, but not specific seats. This gives your guests the freedom to choose who they want to sit next to, but saves the larger hassle of a complete free-for-all.

It’s also a nice idea to mix up different groups to give your guests a chance to interact with each other. For example, you don’t need to contain your families to designated tables or have friendship groups clearly segregated. On the other hand, avoid peppering individuals into well-defined groups. Consider splitting your tables into 50/50 bride and groom-invited guests, and for those friends or colleagues who don’t know the majority of guests, try to seat them with people you know are more outgoing and likely to help them feel welcome.

Avoid mixing clashing personalities, such as those with strong opposing political views, introverts and extroverts, or those you just simply don’t see gelling. It’s not worth risking it on your special day, so if in doubt, opt for a different seating arrangement.

Singles & Kid’s Tables

The concept of a ‘single’s table’ has become pretty outdated, and can have your single guests feeling shoved into an identity with people they might have nothing in common with. Seat your single brother with other family members, your single childhood friend with some people from work who might also not know too many guests. There are creative ways to place those who come alone without making them feel isolated.

On the other hand, some couples opt for a kid’s table to keep the smaller guests ‘rounded up’ and occupied. If you plan to have many children at your wedding, a table lower off the ground with activities such as drawing or even a magician can be a nice touch to keep them entertained (and allow parents an opportunity to relax as well!)

Speak To Friends & Family

Whilst you and your partner know your wedding guests the best, lean on your bridal party and family for help and inspiration too. Those who know the complex dynamics between your guests might be able to offer suggestions to avoid awkward placements . Even if it’s just for a second opinion, speaking with trusted loved ones can ease some of the pressure.

Keep in mind that your first seating plan will almost definitely not end up being your last, so don’t get disheartened if you feel like you just can’t work it out. Like a jigsaw puzzle, it will come together in the end!

The Perfect Wedding Seating Arrangement: What You Want It To Be

Whilst you want to please everyone, remember that as long as your guests can see you enjoying yourself, they should be happy with their placement.

The best starting point is to choose a venue that doesn’t lock you into rigid arrangements.

January: Barbeque & Lawn Games

As summer gets into full swing, it doesn’t get better than a barbecue facing the sea breeze or under a tree canopy at the park. A barbeque on a balmy day presents a casual opportunity for colleagues and clients to relax and network away from the formality of a structured workplace. To make your barbecue even more jovial and encourage attendees to relax, arrange lawn games such as croquet, boules, cricket, rounders or outdoor bowling, as friendly or as competitive as you like! If you’re looking for an alcohol-free event, cleanse your palette with zingy lemonade, fresh fruit kebabs and grilled pineapple.

February: Wine Tasting

We’re a nation of wine lovers, and in almost every state you can find plenty of top-quality vineyards. Head to a cellar door for an in-depth look at wine production methods, a stroll or picnic around the vineyards, a tour around the factory, and a few tasters of the bottles produced there. You could also hire a hop-on, hop-off bus to take you around key wine regions such as the Yarra Valley or the Mornington Peninsula. For alcohol-free alternatives, try coffee tasting, chocolate tasting, cheese tasting or honey tasting. Choose some produce to stock for future events to provide a more personal touch to your catering.

March: Scavenger Hunt

A healthy dose of competition outside of the work environment can foster increased motivation, independence and innovation. Arrange a friendly challenge for your colleagues to look for specific items at your corporate event venue during a scavenger hunt. You could use Easter eggs, brand logo stickers or even small company gifts, with people split up into smaller teams or searching individually. Keep the atmosphere light-hearted and get your colleagues to embrace their inner child, for a fun-filled event away from boardroom stressors and corporate expectations.

April: Cultural Exchange

Many of us work in diverse workplaces – a feature that should be celebrated. Dedicate a day or evening to hosting an event sharing each other’s global cultures. Whether you decide to each prepare a national dish or work with caterers and make use of a full-scale commercial kitchen from your venue (such as you’ll find right here at Canvas House), this creative corporate event idea is a great opportunity to learn about what you and your colleagues call home. You could also invite guests to dress in traditional attire; as formal or informal as you wish.

May: New Skills Workshop

If you’re looking for a creative corporate event idea that brings your team closer together whilst adding to their skillset, a workshop or novel training session is the pick for you. Take a mixology class where you learn to whip up your own cocktails, partake in a cooking class that teaches you how to make a dish you can tuck into altogether afterwards, or experiment with a technological innovation or VR device that could end up becoming a commonplace tool in your workplace. Whatever masterclass you decide on for your event, make sure it’s accessible and interesting for the majority, if not all, attendees.

June: Dinner Party With A Twist

As the nights draw longer and colder, we crave company indoors, in smaller, intimate groups. Sometimes, a simple, hearty corporate dinner party with top quality food and beautiful settings can be all you need for a successful work event. Dinner parties are great for corporate celebrations such as networking, anniversaries, or awards nights. If you’re looking to take it up a notch, add an element of intrigue with a murder mystery, Cluedo or other traditional parlour game to facilitate conservation that doesn’t get stuck in the same small-talk circles.

July: Escape Room

Escape rooms are great team building activities for corporate groups. Pick a game narrative that appeals to your team, or even a few if you’re a larger company that needs to split up into groups. You’ll have around an hour to escape by working together to solve challenges. It’s a great way to get lost in a compelling story and undertake a novel mission in the depths of winter. After you’ve escaped (or not!), debrief and regale your adventures in a nearby local Melbourne event venue with some cocktails and nibbles.

August: Charity Gala

Learning how to host a gala dinner takes a little more prep than your ordinary corporate event, but it’s certainly one that leaves a lasting impression. The purpose of a gala is to bring together investors, clients, colleagues, important members of the community and other high-profile individuals to raise interest, awareness or funding for a cause; be it a charity or your own company. Other brands are often more interested in providing sponsorship for gala events which can help towards running costs, and you can use a portion of your ticket sales to not only donate to chosen charities, but also put towards this style of higher-budget event.

September: Neon Paint & Sip

Most of us are familiar with the concept of ‘paint and sip’ events – afternoons or evenings spent channelling your inner Picasso, using wine as your creative aid to help indulge your inner artist. Take it up a notch and impress your colleagues or clients by using neon paint to create artwork that glows in the dark. This is a great way to help teams let off some steam, have fun, and embrace experimentation by trying something new in a social environment, away from the pressures and routine of everyday work routines.

October: Fancy Dress Party

As the weather starts to turn warmer, take the opportunity to embrace the longer, lighter evenings and change in the seasons with a light-hearted fancy dress party. Depending on the nature of the corporate event, you could stick to a more formal dress code such as ‘black and white’, or, pick a unique fancy dress theme that encourages your attendees to have a laugh while flexing their creativity. Grab your cameras and get silly – this is a great corporate event idea if you want your guests to truly unwind and focus on having fun.

Prior to the event, all those who opt in will have their name placed in a hat, before each picks someone at random (and in secret) to buy a gift for. During the party, your guests can open their presents, and guess and reveal who bought each person’s gift. This way, everyone gets to open something, but you’re not obligated to spend copious amounts on gifts for every individual. Just make sure you set a clear budget in advance.

Call the girls… you’re getting married!!!

A hen do, or bachelorette party as it’s also known, is normally held a month or so before your wedding day, and it’s a chance to gather your gals and have one big jamboree to send away your pre-wedding nerves and celebrate with your closest friends as you say goodbye to your single life. The concept is a bit outdated, yes, but who are we to turn down any opportunity to get the speakers and bubbly out!

We’re not saying the hen party is more fun than the wedding… but… here’s 10 of the unique hen’s party themes for 2024 that will absolutely raise the bar for The Big Day (the other one, where the men are allowed).

Top 10 Unique Hen’s Party Themes For 2024

1. Here Come The Brides

For whatever the reason, many well-loved wedding dresses end up in charity shops. While some do get worn again for someone else’s big day, the reality is that many end up ripped to shreds and covered in fake blood for Bridezilla Halloween costumes, or doomed to an eternal life in the display window.

Ask your guests to get their hands on a charity-shop wedding dress for your hen’s party theme, and your ‘bridal party’ will become a literal ‘party full of brides’, who’ve donated some money to a good cause at the same time.

2. Boat Cruise – Sail and Celebrate

Anchors away! If you dream of celebrating on a private yacht with the wind in your hair and the sea at your feet, a boat cruise hen party might just float your boat. Picture this: your own luxury vessel cruising the coast, with endless champagne and a crew ready to make sure you’re treated like queens of the ocean.

Above deck, there’s plenty of room for dancing under the stars, hosting wild party games, or simply relaxing and soaking up the sun. With a playlist of your favorite party anthems echoing across the waves and stunning seaside views, this is one hen party that will make waves—literally!

3. Mamma Mia!

Let’s go to the other end of the spectrum, with a family-friendly hen’s party theme that you’ll be happy to bring your mother-in-law to. The Meryl Streep-led film ‘Mamma Mia!’ follows a young bride’s journey in the lead up to her wedding day.

Most Abba fans are familiar with the iconic hen-do scene; a night of fever-dream dancing in a Greek taverna, and the occasional 70s disco performance from Mum & Co’s former glory days.

Turn your venue space into a Mediterranean island for the night by decorating your archways with delicately scented jasmine and covering the walls in white and blue wallpaper, and you can have your very own Mamma Mia-fied hen-do with Abba blasting all night long.

4. Dress As Your Partner

Sure, you love your fiancé, but what’s a healthy relationship without some gentle teasing? Though your future spouse may not be attending your hen-do in person, their spirit can still be felt.

Tell your guests to come dressed as the one you’ll soon be exchanging vows with, whether you provide a picture brief, or leave it up to their imaginations – and get a true glimpse of how your friends see your beau.

Serve your partner’s favourite drinks and nibbles at your local event space, and bust out their signature dance moves on a neon dance floor, like the one we have ready-and-waiting at Canvas House.

5. Smurfs

Looking to make a statement with your hen party theme without it necessarily being a raunchy one? Have a smurf-themed bachelorette! What other opportunity do you get to cover yourself in blue paint, wear a pointy white hat and wear what essentially looks like a white nappy?

With this theme, you’re guaranteed to be laughing all night, and truly let out any last minute nerves with your girls: you simply can’t be stressed when you’re dressed like a smurf. Serve blue curacao cocktails for that extra level of commitment, and host all the classic kids games like Twister and Musical Statues. As unique party themes go, you’ll struggle to find a hen-do like it.

6. Cowgirls In Space

Your upcoming title as ‘newly-weds’’ signals your foray into new adventures with your spouse. You’ll be covering new ground together, discovering new planets, as it were, and battling alien concepts like house mortgages and marriage tax.

On the other hand, you’re giving up your Wild West side, the reckless, rodeo-loving free spirit who can’t be tamed by man nor beast nor mechanical bull. Marry up the two (if you will), with a space-cowgirl foray for your hen do. Dress as an astronaut, a toe-tapping cowgirl, or both, and host a surreal, raucous party that’s as wild as your besties on a Friday night.

7. Pastel

At the start of the year, Pantone hailed ‘peach fuzz’ as the colour of 2024. This cosy shade of orangy pink spun pastel fans into a frenzy, claiming pastel colours are back in vogue for spring and summer, and for good reason.

You’re going to be with your dearly beloved until you’re ‘old and grey’, right? Well, why not put the words into practice by grabbing the gang and dressing yourselves in nighties, knit skirts, and sensible cardigans, and stay up well past your bedtime for your hen-do.

It’s not often you see a group of literal, human-sized chickens parading round the streets on a hen night. But for the bride-to-be who doesn’t want to take the whole marriage thing too seriously, getting your crew to dress up as the feathery, flightless birds you’re named after sounds like an equally unforgettable party.

Make sure the experienced bartenders at Canvas House are serving you eggnog, as well as all the other cock-tails that contain egg whites… or does that count as cannibalism?

10. Sten-Do // Hag Party

Not all of us choose our nearest and dearest from the same sex. Aside from that, some couples have been entwined in each other’s lives and networks for so long that it really is impossible to distinguish which friend ‘belongs’ to who. There’s nothing wrong with breaking tradition and having your guy pals share the day with you.

Or, you can host a hybrid, shared ‘sten’ or ‘hag’ with your significant other, rather than forcing your mates to pick which event to attend if you’re planning to host over the same weekend, or making them spend double the money going to both. After all, a party is whatever you make it!

1. Rustic Retreat

As we hunker down for the colder months and wait for spring to return, there’s nothing more romantic to imagine than a cosy wooden cabin, filled with board games, tartan throws and old books that smell like mould. Bring all the best parts of a cottage cabin retreat to a contemporary event space, and host a winter party theme that truly encapsulates all there is to love about winter: putting on your huge wool sweater, indulging in an abundance of rich food and drink, and sharing cosy spaces and stories with friends and family.

Whether you want to keep your rustic party theme PG or not is up to you, but we won’t blame you if you want to swap out the hot chocolate for eggnog and send your kids to their own rustic cabin for the night.

2. Penguin Party

A playful twist on a black-tie cocktail party, this winter party theme adds a funky, flippery addition to a classic black and white affair. Dress like a literal or abstract penguin, or just come in a tuxedo with a bow tie, and add a splash of whimsy to what can sometimes become a lacklustre dress code if not hosted with enough flare.

You’ll find there are equally fancy wintery cocktails to be served at your event in highballs and martini glasses, making sure this theme doesn’t veer too far into the juvenile. A gingerbread martini, Irish coffee, or classic negroni are all warming tipples that would blend in just right. Play parlour games or bring in a roulette and croupier for an ‘adult penguin’ party, and sip the night away whilst you discuss the worrying increase of polar bears in the region.

3. Ice Ice Baby

Once the temperature drops below 10 degrees, you may as well be in the South Pole. So really, it makes perfect sense to host an Antarctic themed party and truly embrace the cold, dark nights. Whether you tell your guests to come as polar animals, your dress code implies ‘the frostier the better’, or you and your partner ‘helm’ the party as the two ill-fated lovers clinging to that notorious piece of wood in the freezing depths of the ocean, an ice-themed party is as cool as it gets.

Keep your decor in icy tones to add to the theme, by having your walls and fixtures in crystal whites and blues. A fog machine will add to the crisp atmosphere… just make sure your guests aren’t actually shivering, or they won’t be sticking around for long. Make up for the facade of a winter palace with hot plates and luscious red wines, to warm from the inside out.

4. Banquet Dinner Party

When winter comes, it’s nice to picture ourselves in the likes of an old stone castle, fire blazing in the hearth, with thick stockings and regal furnishings to adorn our cavernous living room as staff present us with the chef’s finest by candlelight. For one night only, bring those fantasies to life, by decorating your event space like a Medieval castle that will keep you safe and cosy from the outside elements.

Pick your favourite 10 – 15 people and set up one long wooden table with the finest crystal, and a menu to make barons and baronesses stir in their graves. Have you and your friends wined and dined by our experienced wait staff, from a menu of pre-selected delicacies curated by local producers and professional chefs, a perfect way to celebrate a milestone birthday in style. For added authenticity, round off the evening with a harp performance, court jester, or spot of folk dancing.

5. 80s Après Ski

Were you around in the era of garish, neon puffer jackets and sunglasses, skiing or not-skiing? Colourful ski fashion left a mark on what many of us picture when someone says the words ‘80s party theme’. But you can host a winter do that leaves out the slaloms and keeps the most important part – the après ski. Play disco tunes and synth hits from the decade on an equally neon dance floor like you’ll find at Canvas House, and bring out glow-in-the-dark face paint for some truly escapist fun.

Unveil the chocolate fountains, and the fondues, and get voguing. You might find a bramble, espresso martini and amaretto sour on the drinks menu, all popular cocktails from the après-ski heydays that may take you back to some fondly remembered hangovers. Instead of stumbling back to your creaky wooden chalet at the end of the night, you’ll be a stonesthrow from Melbourne CBD, ready to hop in a cab to take you home, or into the city to continue the night.

6. It’s Summer Somewhere

Much like the phrase ‘it’s 6 o’clock somewhere’, so too is it summer somewhere – all across the northern hemisphere to be exact. If winter is so not your season, why host a party that makes you feel as bitter on the inside as you already do on the outside? Instead, opt for inspiration from the glamorous social media reels you’re no doubt seeing off friends who’ve escaped the colder months, enjoying luxurious holidays galavanting around the Mediterranean.

Tell your guests to come in their thickest coats and jackets, with their summer layers ready underneath. Decorate your space with beach-themed regalia, and serve your guests from sangria cocktail jugs and refreshing lemonade stands. Of course, you’ll want to turn the heating up for this one!

7. Mulled Wine, Spice & All Things Nice

Synonymous with the sight of condensed air from our breath is the warm tickle of mulled wine, cradled round grateful fingers. Winter isn’t winter without the alluring scent of mulled wine wafting through a pub or street market, and it’s really easy to make. It’s also one of the easiest winter party themes to host, providing a simple centrepiece from which to hold an excuse to catch up with all your friends (mulled cider is allowed too).

This kind of winter party theme wouldn’t suffer if there was a bonfire to go along with it, perfect in cosy courtyards as we have at our venue hire space in Melbourne at Canvas House. Kit out your decking with plenty of marshmallows and skewers for the kids (and the adults, let’s be honest), pile on some thick woollen blankets, and you’ll have all the cosiness of a winter campfire, with all the comfort of an urban setting… indoor toilets and central heating provided.

8. Winter Olympics

If you’re the kind of person who thinks a party isn’t a party unless there’s some kind of game involved, this theme is right up your street. Host your own mini-Winter Olympics, taking inspiration from real sporting events as much or as little as you want. Make use of our dedicated event planners to come up with creative ways to get your party guests moving and make the most of your space.

Separate your invitees into small teams of 4 or 5 and designate countries ahead of time, encouraging them to dress in the flag’s colours or traditional attire. This is a great team bonding experience that works well for a corporate company event to let off some steam, or a birthday party that does things a little differently.

9. Midnight In Paris

Whether you’ve seen the film or not, the phrase ‘midnight in Paris’, surely conjures up thoughts of dimly lit jazz bars, cigar smoke rolling over velvet chairs, and the brisk cold waiting outside on the cobbled streets of one of the most famous cities in the world. Host an evening filled with French delicacies, from champagne to
les huîtres to macarons, perhaps a pianist to tinkle away through the evening, or a cabaret performance to liven things up.

If you want to host a party that’s true to the Woody Allen film of the same name, incorporate a 1920s twist, by having a flapper-style dress code or shrouding your party in the mystery of the prohibition era, which we’ve covered as an entire theme on our creative party ideas blog.

10. Christmas In July

And of course – the one we’ve all been waiting for – Christmas in July. If the rest of the world gets to celebrate the end of cold nights and the days getting longer, why can’t we? Mark the Winter Solstice on 22nd July with your own Christmas party, when wearing all the thick Santa hats actually makes sense, instead of sweating through them. And if it’s really true that Father Christmas only gets one day off a year, then surely he won’t mind making a quick trip down from the North Pole to fill up those empty stockings?

We don’t need to tell you how to throw a Christmas party, so just focus on gathering your reds and whites, and let us know what colour tinsel you need. We’ll bring the turkey, you bring the unforgettable dance moves.

1. Pirate Party

We think pirate parties for adults are due a comeback in 2024, so why not to be the first to kick off their revival? We’re talking full Captain Sparrow, complete with hooks, eyepatches, hats and bandanas. Cover your space in gold and crossbones, and when you think you’ve put on enough eyeliner, put on some more. And don’t worry – if you’re hosting your event in a professional party venue such as Canvas House, our professional, friendly security team will be standing by the door to make sure no other pirates come in and try to steal your hard-stolen loot.

2. Colour Of The Rainbow

Sometimes we want to host a themed party but can’t be bothered to put in all the tiring hours thinking how to pull it off. No one likes attending a party that seems half put-together, so a theme that’s as simple as a colour is as good as it gets for those who love to party but hate to plan. Pick your colour wisely, as it will form the dress code, influence the food and drinks menu, affect the decor, and above all – create the atmosphere. A black theme will invite more of a cocktail party feel, whereas a green colour scheme will veer more towards a nature theme. Picking a purple colour may be fun but harder to dress for, and red would certainly make a statement – but may be difficult to look at en masse for many hours in a row!

3. The Metro System

We know what you’re thinking – how am I supposed to dress as a metro line? Or make myself look like ‘Richmond’? In fact, ‘the metro system’ is one of the most unique party themes for adults that doubles up as an immediate icebreaker, as guests try to guess what stations you’ve come as. Think less about dressing exactly like your local tram or light rail stop (although you could be inspired by the stereotypes of those you traditionally find around them, such as the edgy alternatives down Brunswick Street or the city bankers round Parliament), and more as the literal words themselves. For example, become a swan with a rock for ‘Swanston Street’, or turn up with grey feet for ‘Footscray.’ You’ll have to think outside the box for this one, but if your guests are up for a creative challenge, they’ll love it.

4. Swing Jazz Party

With jazz strengthening its foothold in 2024 a comeback genre, unique party themes for adults filled with jazz, live or recorded, is always a great idea. Whether you want to hire a skiffle band, a choir of jazz singers or stick to a humongous double bass is up to you. But did you know that there are also dances specifically invented for jazz music? The lindy hop, or swing jazz dancing, was a popular style in the 40s when this genre was at its peak popularity. You could also hire an instructor to teach some simple steps, and amp up the atmosphere with some 40s themed decor. Travel back to some post-wartime glamour with this vintage toe-tapper of a theme.

5. Initials

If you’re celebrating a milestone, such as your 40th or 50th birthday, what better way to honour yourself than asking your guests to come as something that starts with the same letter as one of your initials. This is a great theme as it allows for a variety of fancy dress from the mundane to the magical… provided your initials don’t start with X Y and Z. To delve further into the theme, look for drinks and canapes to serve that start with these letters too. You may end up with an amusing mix on your menu, but it will be sure to make for a memorable night.

6. Song Titles

Dressing ‘as a song’ leaves much room for variation, as you can dress as the artwork cover, the musician’s iconic style, their look in the music video, or simply become the title of the song itself. Stuck for inspiration? Think how much fun you could have putting together a physical representation of ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’, or ‘Texas Hold ‘Em.’ Bonus points if you play the songs your guests have come dressed as throughout the night, and make sure you find somewhere with a sparkling dance floor to host your night, like the one we have here at Canvas House, so you can spend the night boogying away… minus the murder (unless you’re after a murder mystery party, in which case jump to number 16 on our list).

7. Painting Party

For an event that lacks in glamour what it makes up for in fun, a painting party is a unique party theme for adults where you get to unleash your inner child and get messy. Inform your guests to wear plain white t-shirts and plain trousers they don’t mind getting ruined – or provide them if you’re feeling generous – and unleash a room full of colour. Keep things relatively classy with a ‘paint and sip’ type affair, lean into the juvenile aspect of the theme by adding paint to traditional party games like Twister and tug of war, or simply cover the walls and ceilings in blank sheets and see what happens. Amongst unique party themes, this silly setting can be a fantastic stress reliever that will be sure to leave some hilarious memories behind.

8. Dress As The Guest

This idea is great for those planning an event for someone else, whether it’s a surprise birthday, an engagement party or anniversary. The partygoer in question doesn’t need to have a particularly unique look – although of course you’ll create an even bolder theme if they do – you just need to be able to source a wig of their hairstyle, then order one for every single guest attending. Find a picture of your partner, parent or friend in easy-to-replicate clothes that resemble their personal style, or choose a photo from their childhood or teen years if you’re planning to really embarrass them. Then, watch as they arrive to all their friends and family dressed as their clone, and watch chaos ensue as men and women, old and young alike, find it impossible to distinguish one from another the entire evening.

9. 007

Dirty martinis and fur minks abound, welcome the dangerous allure of a Bond theme party. This is sure to be a black tie event complete with glamour, jewels and of course, a little drop of impending peril hanging in the air. Bring the drama with professional cocktail makers and poker-faced croupiers. Hire a roulette wheel and take inspiration from the films for what to serve on your menu. Don’t forget those all important invitations, which should arrive via email or post as mysterious as they are enticing. And if you’re after a local private party space to transform for your 007 night… The name’s House, Canvas House.

10. Neon Disco

Take two themes – a glow in the dark party and a 70s disco theme, and mash them together. The result is a cascade of neon movements that feels somewhere between an underground rave and a Coldplay concert – playlist dependent of course. Stack your guests up with neon glow stick bracelets on arrival, cover the walls in neon wallpaper, and turn the lights right down. This unique party theme for adults is all about freedom and fun, so let your hair down and dance the night away. On your drinks menu? Anything with blue curacao, a lightning cobalt liqueur that looks like a chemical science experiment, but will bring a unique aftertaste and neon quality to your cocktails.

11. Classic Dinner Party

When was the last time you showed up to a private dinner party that wasn’t in a restaurant, where food was the main affair, and the music was quiet enough to hold real, long conversations? When we think of throwing a party we tend to picture speakers, dark rooms and plenty of ice buckets, but it can be nice to pale things back sometimes and host a more intimate scene, whether for a birthday or to celebrate a special occasion. Hire out a cosy venue you can make your own like the Nook at Canvas House, furnish it with warm cushions and soft lighting, and host a night in an elevated private dining room, where you and your guests can benefit from a professionally curated menu, whilst being able to savour some great conversations alongside your delicious meal.

12. Pyjama Party

Sometimes the thought of getting dressed up, preparing for a long night of loud music and extroverted socialising is enough to simply turn us off the idea of going. Planning a party of that scale can also be extra stressful, especially if you’re not professional party planners like us. But if you still want to get your friends together, and create a space for shared memories and chilled out entertainment, a pyjama party is a unique way to do so. Decorate your space with plenty of pillows, fairy lights and cosy blankets, and invite your guests into a calming atmosphere that feels more like a grown up sleepover.

13. Musical Artist Experience

We’ve recently witnessed the resurging popularity of artist tributes, with no clearer example than a Taylor Swift drag queen who performed in Federation Square to a crowd of 10,000. Unfortunately, most of us don’t have the party budget to hire our favourite artists to perform on stage. Aside from that, getting tickets to your favourite musicians’s live shows in the first place can be expensive or down right impossible. So why not throw a makeshift concert with all your friends and family instead? For bigger artists, source local tribute performers who are able to be hired for your very own private performance. Failing that, blast your favourite tracks through the sound system and lose yourself and your guests in a party that will feel just as much like a concert as the real thing – if not better.

14. Children’s Party For Adults

Remember all those games we used to play at birthday parties as kids? Musical statues, musical chairs, pin the tail on the donkey? Why did we stop those – just because we became adults? Invite some nostalgia into the room and throw a party with all the classic games, complete with party bags and face painting. This theme will be even more resonant if you’re sharing it with childhood friends or family members you really do remember playing these games with at parties as a child. Of course, there are adult twists you can add to these games – such as by having two people to a chair in musical chairs, or swapping a tail for… something else. Alternatively, just lean into the childhood innocence of the night, and swap your cocktail stand for a pic’n’mix booth.

15. Destination Party

So you want to go on holiday. The weather’s getting cooler, the work pressure’s growing, and you just want to escape from it all. Bring the holiday to you, and even better – have all your friends come along too! Whether it’s a glistening beach in Fiji with paddling pools, deckchairs and those little fiddly cocktail umbrellas, or the bustling streets of Barcelona on a warm summer night with tapas bites on offer, pick a city, an island or any other dream getaway to be the source of your inspiration. Tell your guests to ‘pack’ accordingly and whisk everyone off to a party paradise, without the airfare.

16. Murder Mystery

What could be more fun than telling one of your guests to drop dead as dramatically or mysteriously as they want to, and then spend the rest of the evening working out which of your other guests committed the heinous crime? When it comes to party themes for adults, a murder mystery is always a funny evening, as you work your way through clues to uncover the sequence of events. We’ve covered in a bit more detail how to throw an epic murder mystery affair for your next themed event, but this is one of those super versatile themes that you can pull off at nearly every type (though perhaps not a wake…). You can find pre-plotted packages available to buy online, or get super creative and interweave your own situation into the story.

17. Circus Theme

The circus is in town – and it’s heading to your very next party. Bring in the acrobats, the contortionists, the jugglers and the hula-hoopers, for a wild and wacky event that’s anything but normal. This unique party theme is sure to dazzle and delight, so long as you can find true entertainers to impress with their unique set of skills. You’ll want a tombola, a balloon-artist, and plenty of colour for your guests to feel as though they’ve stepped into a ringtop circus.

18. Baking Masterclass

Though the days of making sourdough are (thankfully) long behind us, that doesn’t mean we should toss baking out of the window altogether. Host a masterclass for you and your friends, and learn a new skill at the same time. For this, you’ll need an open kitchen space, which we can happily provide at Canvas House, and an easygoing teacher who can instruct you on the process from start to finish whilst remembering you’re still there to have fun! This party theme for adults is certainly more laid back than some of our others, but at the end of it you’ll have shared real quality time with your guests, and – all being well – have something sweet to show for it. If all else fails, bring out the icing and hundreds and thousands, and you can stick to decorating cupcakes.

When was the last time you saw a true magician, the bunny-pulled-out-of-a-hat type? Host a party that’s a feast for the eyes with a magician hire, and play into the theme of all things mysterious and secretive. You could lean into a creepy magician aesthetic and have your party feel a little spooky, especially perfect for a party around Halloween. Or host a family friendly event that’s as wondrous and delightful for adults as it is for children. Roving magicians will entertain your guests all evenings with their card tricks and sleight-of-hand, or pull the stops out and hire an illusionist to perform bigger performances that leave you truly speechless.
